About Yelowtail Amberjack
The scientific name for the Yellowtail Amberjack or Yellowtail Kingfish is Seriola lalandi
The yellowtail amberjack is also known as the yellowtail kingfish or Great Amberjack. This is generally an open water schooling fish. The swim in small to large groups. Their preference is to inhabit rocky formations and reefs, sandy areas and sometimes in the entrance to estuaries. You can find them in shallower water and to a depth of around 50 metres. But, this species has been seen in depths of 300 metres.
Size of the Yellowtail Amberjack - The most common size of a catch is about 1 metre and weighing between 5 - 10 kilograms. The maximum size of the Yellowtail Amberjack is about 2 metres long and weighing in at approximately 70 kilograms. The juvenile fish weigh up to 7 kilograms and tend to swim in large groups in the hundreds. The young are hard to find as they are usually out far from the land. And they use seaweed and floating objects to hide.
How to identify a Yellowtail Amberjack
- The young are yellow with black bands which fade as they age
- The mature Yellowtails have long bodies and a slender head
- They are blue or blue-green on their back
- Whitish silver on their underbody
- Their tail fin is yellow
Where to Catch Yellowtail Amberjack
Adults often form large shoals around deep reefs and rocky outcrops in coastal areas and around pinnacles and offshore islands. They are also found in bays and harbours around jetties and pylons.
