The height of the season runs from July to October when the water is between 17-19 degrees. This is when the tuna in their large schools arrive off the coast. This is when any level of angler can land one of these beautiful eating fish.

How to identify a Yellowfin Tuna
- The second dorsal, back and finlets are bright yellow

Where to Catch Yellowfin Tuna
Yellowfin Tuna typically habitat in the top 100 metres of the water. Scientific study tagging indicated that a Yellowfin Tuna would on average be in waters to a depth of 75 metres. However, they have been recorded to depths of 1160 metres! The yellowfin tuna is found offshore but depending on circumstances they have been known to approach closer to the shore. They swim in schools with other yellowfin tuna of the same size. They have been known to travel with other varieties of tuna.
Sunrise morning fishing and sunset afternoon fishing are when most anglers land a yellowfin tuna. However, tide changes also alter their behaviour. The tide can agitate the water and the yellowfin tuna can venture closer to shore in search of food. If you are leaving from the Cronulla Wharf or Bundeena wharf you will be in the deep-sea ocean in no time.
