The scientific name for the Tailor fish is Pomatomus Saltatrix

Tailor is also known as Bluefish. Tailor is a good game fish and put up a fight when hooked. Be careful as Tailor has sharp little teeth. When you land a Tailor be sure to bleed it due to its soft flesh. Tailor can be found inshore and around estuaries and turbulent waters such as surf breaks.

Size of  Tailor -  Known to grow up to 14 kilograms and live for 10 years the majority of Tailor caught are 30cm - 50cm in length. They generally weigh in at .5 of a kilogram to 1.5 kilograms.

How to identify a Tailor fish

• They have a protruding lower jaw
• Small sharp teeth
• Forked tail with a streamlined body
• Silver in colour with pale green and yellow fins
• Along the back, they are prominently green and olive

Where to Catch Tailor

The juvenile Tailor can be found near estuaries and expansive coastal bays. The older more mature Tailor like the turbulent waters around headland reefs and surf breaks. NOTE - The minimum length is 30cm when fishing for Tailor with a 20 catch per day bag limit. Tailor as a species is falling in numbers. If you happen to land Tailor it would be preferred that they were released back into the ocean.
