How to identify a Pigfish

  • The female Pigfish is are pink above and creamy-white to yellow below
  • The female also has 3 horizontal rows of red along the sides
  • The male Pigfish is reddish in colour and cream to yellow below
  • The male has a large black splash on the dorsal fin

This unique fish can change its sex during its lifecycle from female to male. The Pigfish has an elongated mouth with 4 - 6 pointy little teeth on the top row. The Pigfish feeds on Benthic Invertebrates which are organisms without a backbone that live on the bottom of a body of water. The Eastern Pigfish live to around 30 years of age. The majority of the catches are aged between 5 - 15 years of age. Depending on market prices you can expect to pay up to $40 per kilo for the Pigfish.

Where to Catch Pigfish

The best time to catch a Pigfish is all year round. This bottom-feeding fish lives around reefs and coral and can be caught to a depth of around 50 metres. There are different techniques for landing this fish. A lot of anglers say they have hooked onto the Pigfish when fishing for Snapper. Baits used include pilchards, fresh cuttlefish, squid, and prawn.

The Pigfish is excellent to eat. Some people put the Pigfish in their Top 5 all-time fish to eat. This table fish has white flesh, mild to sweet flavour and texture and is good for sashimi.
